Disc Golf - Types of Discs

  • To begin this project I needed to learn more about the different types of discs used in disc golf, so I reached out to a subject matter expert. We discussed which disc types are most helpful for a beginner to learn about and we narrowed it down to four: Putters, Midranges, Fairway Drivers, and Distance Drivers. There are other hybrid disc types that we decided were outside of the scope of this project. As we discussed the information, I created a content map using www.MindMeister.com.

  • The project is created using Articulate Storyline 360. I began to design the slide by starting with a general format that I’ve seen used for infographic slides similar to this one. Since the subject matter is disc golf I wanted to take advantage of the beautiful outdoors for the background of the project.

Once I found an appropriate background, it was obvious that the buttons should appear on the right since the subject of the background image, the basket, is on the left of the image. I chose to have a rounded rectangular box appear when the user hovers over each button, with enough transparency that the text is readable but you can still make out the basket in the background.

I originally made the buttons in a 2:3 ratio, but needed to make room for the title/instructions. This naturally led to the buttons becoming more narrow to allow room at the top for more text. I ultimately think this shorter and wider button is a better look, and is reminiscent of a disc.

Additionally, the background has lots of vibrant colors - green grass, blue sky, and fall colored trees. I didn’t want the button colors to fight with the background colors, so I chose a more muted green for the buttons and information boxes. The color, coupled with a bit of transparency, helps buttons and information boxes visually integrate with the image.

  • I was able to learn a few new Articulate Storyline 360 skills during this project. I specifically wanted to try hover animations in this project, so I created four buttons to correspond to each type of disc, and played around with the animations in the hover state. I ultimately decided on a border that appears on the right and left of the button and joins in the middle as the user hovers over it.

I also learned more about slide layers while creating this project. For this project I created a layer for each of the disc types, and intentionally allowed the information to appear when the user hovers over the button instead of having to click on the button. For a simple project like this, I wanted to information to be easily accessible.
